Riassunto: Il n’est pas d’usage de placer Karajan dans le quarteron des chefs doués pour la musique française. Et pourtant il nous offre une leçon éblouissante d’orchestre. Le philharmonique de Berlin est en grande forme. La variété et la richesse des timbres instrumentaux est stupéfiante. Certes, on pourra trouver ici et là un manque de narration musicale, de poésie, voire de fantasque. Münch reste un modèle du genre, mais il n’a disposé ni de la qualité orchestrale ni de la plus value technologique de la prise de son. Karajan manque peut-être un peu de transparence, mais jamais sa virtuosité ne s’appesantit : la tenue de la danse générale de Daphnis est superbe et les Jeux de vagues sont merveilleux de brio. La Pavane s’offre le luxe d’une nostalgie sombre aux accents corsetés à la mode hispanique. La surprise est de taille… Karajan n’est peut-être pas dionysiaque, mais il est ensorceleur en diable !

Il enregistra durant toute sa carrière beaucoup de programmes straussiens. Particulièrement à l'aise dans ces partitions où l'opulence sonore n'a d'égale que la finesse de l'orchestration. L'autre caractéristique de la musique de Richard Strauss qui intéressa tout particulièrement Karajan est sans doute toute la palette sonore évoquée dans les nombreux contrastes réclamés par le compositeur. Une terre de prédilection pour la baguette spectaculaire de Karajan ! Dans cet "Ainsi Parlait Zarathoustra", symbole de cet art orchestral, Karajan reste inégalé. Il conduit l'orchestre comme il pilote son jet privé ou ses nombreuses voitures de course, toujours avec une science très développée de la matière et de l'outil mais souvent sur le fil du rasoir. Le lyrisme de cette interprétation est, à chaque écoute, toujours plus impressionnant. Un disque spectaculaire où le compositeur et l'interprète partagent la même vision musicale et esthétique. Riassunto: Marin Alsop Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Philip Glass (b.1937): Symphonies nos. 2 & 3
Though he prefers not to be labeled a 'minimalist' composer, that is the style with which Philip Glass is most associated. His compositions, however, though bearing certain tradmarks, employ a great range of techniques. This adaptive ability contributes to his success as a composer of music ranging from string quartets to largescale orchestral works and mammoth film scores. Marin Alsop conducts her Bournemouth symphony orchestra in these amazing performances of the Second and Third symphonies of legendary American composer Philip Glass. The grand Second Symphony was comissioned by the Brooklyn Acadamy of Music and premiered there in 1994 by Dennis Russell Davies. Also a commissioned work, the Third Symphony is composed for chamber orchestra, and thus bears an intimacy that is brilliantly suited to a smaller ensemble. In both the epically-proportioned Second Symphony and the smaller-scale Third Symphony, Glass returns, in his own way, to his roots at the Juilliard School, writing polyharmonies, rousing finales, and fully-formed symphonic paragraphs. They are true symphonies in scope, structure and seriousness of purpose. Marin Alsop comments on this recording: "Conducting and recording the music of Philip Glass is the completion of a circle for me. I first met Philip Glass in the late 1970s when I started playing violin on some of his recording projects. The new music scene in Manhattan was one of my major inspirations at that time, so working closely with Philip and his ensemble was a dream come true. I had not seen Philip since the mid 1980s until he attended an all Glass concert that I conducted in London. Like his music, it felt like the contuniation of an old friendship, only changed in a simple but profound way."

Completed the year before the symphony, the wintry tone poem "The Tale the Pine-Trees Knew" makes an apt coupling. Lloyd-Jones's performance possesses a clean-limbed vigor that contrasts strikingly with Thomson's more leisurely, wonderfully atmospheric view on Chandos. Astonishingly, Naxos has been sitting on these fine recordings for more than four years; let's just hope we don't have to wait as long again for future installments in Lloyd-Jones's absorbing Bax series. Riassunto: The Möller organ (5 manuals and pedal) of the West End United Methodist Church, Nashville, Tennessee makes a wonderful sound on this disc! The opening Antiphon I allows use of Full Organ and a full organ it is - the reeds aren't too penetrating and at the same time it could almost be mistaken for a Cavaille-Coll. Delcamp's playing is very precise and his choice of registration would probably be close to that of Dupré. The Vêspres is a challenging work, and one of my favourite group of pieces by Dupré. Each one is largely different in tone colour, usually attributable to registration, meter and the position on the scale where the melody line of each piece is pitched. This variety is what makes them an interesting work.
Lamento was written for friends of Dupré's who's child suddenly died. The piece has a very intimate feel to it and very deliberately, in its chromatically ascending chords, an overt outpouring of grief and rage can be felt.
The 6 Chorales provide some variation to the programme, building on those recorded on Volume 1. Also, hearing only a few at a time allows the listener more room for contemplation of the music. Dupré wrote his 79 Chorales as preparatory pieces for learning J.S. Bach's Chorale Preludes, and there's no doubt, through listening to these, that Dupré himself was a great fan of Bach.
Élévation was published when Dupré was 26, and is his earliest published work. It is a gorgeous little piece that is very melodic and soothing to listen to.
Triptyque, paying homage to older forms, consists of three movements: I. Chaconne, II. Musette and III. Dithyrambe.

This discrepancy disappears after the first few bars however, and the rest of the piece is carried off very well. In this piece there is one indescribable modulation that Dupré enchants his listeners with. In the score, Dupré asks that all 32' stops be drawn, resulting in a wonderful cascading effect of falling chords that change every 9th beat. This happens around 5 minutes into the second movement - it truly has to be heard to be believed. The last movement of the concerto reminds me of a Shostakovich Symphony with its strong, angular rhythms and militaristic dotted quaver rhythms. A short recapitulation brings this piece to a well executed, jolting close.
Cortège et Litanie originally existed as one of a group of four piano pieces (Quatre Pièces Op. 19) and it was his American touring agent, Dr. Alexander Russell who persuaded Dupré to make two other arrangements - one for organ solo; another for organ and orchestra (incidentally, the solo version was premiered in September 1923, at a concert which also included the US premiere of the now well known Variations sur un Noël, Op. 20). This piece combines the wonderful slow melody of the Cortège, spoken in dialogues between the organ and the string section of the orchestra. The introduction of the Litanie calls for the woodwinds, with the melody spoken pianissimo by the solo flute. A gradual crescendo brings the piece to its final resting place with three long fortissimo E major chords.
Poème Héroïque also exists in different versions - one for organ solo and the one recorded here. It is dedicated to those that died in the battle of Verdun, in World War I. Although militaristic in flavour, Poème really conveys a sense of the loss sustained in the war and could almost be considered a funeral march.
The Symphony in G minor is very different to any of Dupré's other symphonic works in that it is considerably more difficult to follow its melodic progressions, although with time comes an appreciation, listeners shouldn't expect instant gratification from it. The final Animé movement provides an amazing conclusion to a breathtaking disc.

Poème Héroïque also exists in different versions - one for organ solo and the one recorded here. It is dedicated to those that died in the battle of Verdun, in World War I. Although militaristic in flavour, Poème really conveys a sense of the loss sustained in the war and could almost be considered a funeral march.
The Symphony in G minor is very different to any of Dupré's other symphonic works in that it is considerably more difficult to follow its melodic progressions, although with time comes an appreciation, listeners shouldn't expect instant gratification from it. The final Animé movement provides an amazing conclusion to a breathtaking disc.

The surprise of the disc is Beasts in the Bush for orchestra and speaker. This is a modern parable of well-meaning developers who would change a wilderness into a resort. The animals living in the wilderness will have none of it and are determined to show the unwanted people the "door." What interested me about the piece was that the developers think they are doing good by recycling and giving to environmental groups but would ruin the wilderness out of sheer ignorance. There is humor and interesting facts about the Australian bush in Beasts of the Bush, and the orchestration is light and descriptive.
The Concerto for Accordion, Piano and Strings sounds at first as if it will be something comic but it is a serious work with the accordion taking a prominent part. The piece makes use of the French association of the accordion sounding at times like a description of a Montmartre scene. The music could have been written by one of Les Six. The Overture to an Italian Comedy is a light work inspired by E. M. Forester's A Room with a View, and is evocative of Italy and the violent murder in the book that changes the lives of the English protagonists witnessing the crime.
The music is well performed by the State Orchestra of Victoria and is a lot of fun to listen to. Highly recommended.

Their sound is clear, and the performers maintain an admirable rhythmic drive and control; this is very musical playing. This is a modern instrument performance, informed however by all we heave learned from the original instrument movement, that is, clear articulation, somewhat faster speeds, a chamber music approach rather than an orchestral one.
Don't be fooled by the price; this recording can hold its own against any full-price recording I have heard. Highly recommended as an introduction or as an only recording.

'La parade' is one of his most joyous works, an extended evocation of the carnivalesque, full of dances, marches and games, an untroubled vision of the kind of world he would view through a darkened glass in 'la Valse', bubbling with the kind of exuberant energy you find in Chabrier (one of the three composers Ravel pastiches in homage here along with Gounod, Borodin and Haydn). Dance is a common motif in Ravel, and informs the ghoulishly skittish 'Serenade Grotesque', the old-world eeriness of 'Menuet Antique' and the 'Alborada del gracioso' that bursts out of its muted surroundings in 'Miroirs'.
This movement is complemented by the more reflective side of Ravel's art, the indestructibly mournful 'Pavane pour une infante defunte', the dawn ripples of 'Jeux d'eau', or the sprightly, but generally low-key effects of 'Sonatine'. Pianist Thiollier is at ease in these various Ravelian idioms, alive to colour, mood and humour. when he comes to the famous 'Memoirs', however, more familiar in a sinister orchestral version, he doesn't seem to grasp the more diffuse, Debussy-like impresionism and, with the exception of the aforementioned toreador-strutting 'Alborada', makes it sound a bit dull.

"Flaterie", and "Badinage") is hardly matched even by real French Baroque composers. It's hard to grasp how Telemann could have done it all: be a master of music for every instrumental combination, occasion, and national style (e.g. Les Nations), be sought after by the royal courts of his time, yet have a heart to provide interesting music for the amateur performer, and initiate the first public concerts in Germany; write his own poetry, and engrave his own music. Combine all this with his incredible productivity and it's not hard to understand why he was rated at the head of German composers. The most unusual instrumental feature in this disk is the concerto for two horns and strings in E. Although less technically demanding than Mozart's concerto work for this instrument, it's strong melodic inspiration and, as usual, effective use of the instrument make the concerto a favorite in horn student recitals.
Again, with respect to performance style, I did wish especially in the Quartet for flute, violin, cello and continuo, as well as other pieces for a bit more meat and less delicacy. The performers got bolder in the very last "Conclusion", a short but pungently complex conclusion to the opening Overture, scored for oboes, strings and continuo. Some of the harmonic and rhythmic interplays seem to touch even a bit of early 20th Century at times. I'm going to have to listen a number more times to figure out what I really think of how they did this one. Readers should note that the disk numbers do not correspond with the original Tafelmusik series, which are 3 in number.

She captures the rustic rhythms of the music so infectiously that it's hard to keep your feet still while listening, and she is just as good with Villa-Lobos's lyricism. This composer wrote an enormous amount of music and not all of it is up to his best standard, but so far this series is skimming cream. If you liked Vol. 1, you'll like this one just as well. I have little knowledge of Villa Lobos's piano music; as a youth I stumbled my way through 'O Polichinello' at the keyboard, and I've heard the visceral 'Rudepoêma' performed in recital by Marc-André Hamelin (but don't have his Villa Lobos CD). I was unprepared for the artful but unforced charm of the pieces on this disc.
'Suite Floral' (8 mins.) is a three-piece suite written in a perfumed impressionistic and somewhat derivative style not generally characteristic of the composer. The middle piece, 'Uma Camponeza Cantadeira' ('A Singing Country Girl'), is makes effective use of naive-sounding quintal harmonies and an asymmetric accompanimental figure in the bass. The suite is followed on this CD by 'Ciclo Brasileiro,' a major four-piece suite (22 mins.) whose components separately and in toto are hypnotizing. In my aural imagination, 'The Peasant's Sowing' mimics in right-hand figurations the broadcasting of seed, while a hymnlike chorale in the left hand lauds the fertility of the earth. 'Impressions of a Serenade Musician' is naive-sounding but the virtuosic piano writing, particularly in the repetitive fragmentation of the waltz tune, is artfully sophisticated. 'The Fête in the Heartlands' bustles with high energy and the rapidly alternating chords remind one of the previously mentioned 'O Polichinello' from 'A Prole do bebê.' 'Dance of the White Indian' is a virtuosic and fierce-sounding toccata with ostinato alternating chords surrounding a middle-register melody; it reportedly is a self-portrait of the composer. (I wonder if the hint of the 'Dies Irae' in the melody is intentional; I expect so.)
'Brinqueda de Roda' ('Children's Round Games') is a 12-minute collection of seven simple pieces (possibly meant for children themselves to play) based on Brazilian children's singing and dancing games. The textures are simple, often with oom-pah or Alberti bass accompaniments, the melodies ingratiating and the whole thing utterly charming in its simplicity.

Consider how influential the melodies and rhythms from Latin countries have been on the classical music of Europe and America from Glinka to Copland. In this collection of 48 brief piano pieces based on Brazilian children's folksongs Villa-Lobos has outdone himself in making what is putatively an educational venture on his part into an artistic triumph. As a young man he became involved in collecting folksongs from all over Brazil. In particular he made vocal arrangements of 137 of the tunes he and others had collected for use in schools; the collection was called 'Guia prático' ('Practical Guide'). Then he took sixty or so of them, arranged them imaginatively for piano solo -- each lasting only about a minute or so -- and had them published in twelve volumes also called 'Guia prático.' Nine of those volumes are recorded here by Sonia Rubinsky; we are told in the informative booklet notes by musicologist James Melo that the remaining three volumes have been recorded by Rubinsky and will be issued later.
Clearly these pieces are not for beginning piano students, however. Some of them could be played, probably, by intermediate students, but some are of such musical complexity and technical demands -- e.g. 'Vai Abóbora!' ('Some Pumpkin!'), Vol. VII, No. 2, or the toccata in all but name of 'Vamos Atraz da Serra, Oh! Calunga!' ('Let's Go Behind the Mountain, Oh! Calunga!'), Vol. VI, No. V -- that only a virtuoso could manage them. Best of all, Villa-Lobos keeps the necessarily simple melodies in the foreground -- indeed, one could sing their lyrics if one knew them -- but oh, what he does with the accompaniments! They are dizzyingly varied and inevitably engaging. Brazilian-American pianist Sonia Rubinsky is in the process of recording the complete piano works of Villa-Lobos -- this is Volume 5 -- and clearly has his idiom in her fingers and heart. I have been very positive about previous volumes and am particularly happy with both the present music -- new to me -- and her performance of it.

Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.

But since some people unjustly gave it just 1 star, I had to give it five to balanced it out.
At my hand I have two saxophone concerto CDs to compare side-by-side.
The first one is from EMI, with John Harle (Sax) and Neville Marriner conducting St. Martin in the Fields.
The second one is this Naxos offering, and both CDs have the Ibert, Debussy and Glazunov pieces.
One would assume the EMI disc has to be better because it features the more famous soloist, orchestra and conductor and it is released by a major label. The truth can't be further from that. Naxos wins hands down. I have listened to the EMI disc so many times and always found it boring. That's why I never bought another classical saxophone CD, while at the same time I collected at about 25 different horn concertos. Then I listened to this Naxos disc's clips online and instantly knew Sohre Rahbari is a much better soloist.
The only word I can use to describe the EMI disc is boring. The Naxos disc gives these pieces a more interesting intepretation, because Rahbari's phrasing makes better musical sense. Also, Rahbari also produces a more beutiful tone from her instrument. As an avid jazz listener I know it when the tone from a sax sounds right, and Harle's tone definitely is not right.
As for recording quality, both are pretty good. My system has a very good digital source (Benchmark DAC1) and decent speakers costing over $1000. I also use extremely hi-end headphones (AKG K501 and K1000) to listen for inner details. All the amplification is class A tube equipment. I just don't see how any one can criticize the Naxos CD for poor sound quality. Clarity and sptialness is quite good, and there is no treble sibilance commonly associated with poor digital recordings. The saxophone's tone was beautifully recorded. The Naxos CD sounds slightly better than the EMI. I hope people who commented on its poor sound didn't just listen to it on distorted computer speakers or cheapo earbuds.

Ellen Santaniello also contributes vocals. I was surprised and delighted when I played this CD for the first time, and I continue to be each time I hear it again. This CD has helped to whet my appetite for more such music, and I suspect it would do so for anyone. If you are shopping here, I think you should strongly consider buying this one. I would, however, direct you to two other CDs as well (reminding you that I am by no means a knowledgeable person in this field): Sufi music such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (though there are many other less famous examples, at least as good), and Arab Christian music, especially Marie Keyrouz. Riassunto: The music of Rodrigo breaks no ground, old or new, but it is sunny, light-hearted, easy listening and colorfully orchestrated. Its language is that of the post-Debussy/Ravel "musique française" and "musique espagnole" written in the first half of the 20th by composers such as Sauguet, Milhaud, Ibert or Falla, with late-Romantic outbursts pointing to British composers like Delius or Bax.
The universal fame acquired by the Ajanjuez Concerto and Rodrigo's other Concertos for Guitar(s) has overshadowed the fact that he wrote a number of concertos for other solo instruments: flute, harp, piano, cello and violin. Missing from this compilation are some of his more recent pieces, such as the Concierto como un divertimento for Cello, Concierto para une fiesta for Guitar, as well as the early Juglares for Piano and Orchestra (1923); there is also apparently a version for Guitar of the "Heroic" Piano Concerto.
It is hardly surprising that a piece subtitled "Heroic" and setting out to depict different facets of Heroism, with its four movement exploring "the Sword, the Spur, the Cross and the Laurel", should be anything short of bombastic. It took me a few hearings to warm up to Rodrigo's Piano Concerto - enough to become less sensitive to its showy Liszt and Rachmaninoff borrowings, and more open to its Ravel, Prokoviev and Falla similitudes. And in its best moments there are twists and turns of orchestration that seem to point to a kind of self-deprecating irony, as if Rodrigo was showing us that he was only monkeying the grand Hollywood gestures, without entirely believing in them.
In its genre, the "Summer" Violin Concerto is a great piece, as joyful and colorful as thoses of Khatchaturian and Prokofiev - and, in my opinion, not inferior to them; I wonder why it hasn't acquired the same pride of place at the core of the Violin repertoire, in concert and on disc. As it is, I am aware of only two other recordings, one made by Christian Ferras and George Enescu in 1953 and aptly reissued by Testament with other early Ferras recordings (see my review of Rodrigo: Concierto de estio; Semenoff; Double Concerto; Elizalde; Violin Concerto),and one by Michael Guttman and José Serebrier on ASV (Four Seasons) in a nice collection with four concertos bearing the four seasons as titles. In the present one, Augustin Leon Ara and Enrique Batiz seem well on top of the music, and the sound is of course incomparably better than with Ferras.
I also greatly enjoyed the Cello Concerto ("Concierto en modo galante"), with its first movement sounding like a modernized Vivaldi cello Concerto or Bach seen through the eyes of Stravinsky, its center part a wistful, brooding, meditative cantilena with a pastoral trio full of bird calls, hurdy-gurdy tunes and lifting country dances, its finale a kind of galant Cucarracha, and again a colorful and perky orchestration, full of sardonic skids out of line.
The last disc is devoted to Rodrigo's symphonic output, with tone poems composed between 1925 and 1976. Again they are very enjoyable, couched in the same kind of post-Debussy/Ravel language with whiffs of late-Romanticism evocative of Delius or Bax. In fact, "Musica para un jardin" (Music for a Garden) and "A la busca del mas allà" (In Search of the Beyond) could easily pass of for additions to Jacques Ibert's "Ports of Call". The first is introduced by a joyous orchestral outburst immediately cut short by more mysterious and nocturnal moods evocative of Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole, inluding a flute-led and xylophone-punctuated descent strikingly reminiscent of Wozzeck's suicide in the pond, soon to be followed by a plangent English horn and oboe melody over a soft cushion of strings with celesta and bell punctuations - beautifully atmospheric. Likewise "A la busca...", framed by two suspended cymbals sweeps, has the same kind of mysterious, oriental-sounding melismatas entoned by flute or english horn over soft cushions of strings with xylophone or celesta punctuations, along with a magnificently lyrical theme given to the violins over woodwind bird calls, evocative of Bax' tone poems. Again, highly atmospheric and quite beautiful. "Per la flor..." starts very military-like with an assertive drum tatoo and slightly dissonant brass fanfares, only to calm down into a nostalgic harp-accompanied recitative for cello developping into a passage of Tchaikovskyan lyrical intensity. The music then alternates between the dramatic-military (integral with the march for fifes), sometimes evocative of Shostakovich's War Symphonies, and the nostalgic-Romantic. It ends with a gloomy funeral march, wonderfully orchestrated (harp ostinato, bass clarinet, english horn in its low registers,) and developping to a peak of intensity before abruptly ending.
The 2nd of the Piezas Infantiles from 1925, "Despues de un cuento" sounds exactly in the same style as the 1976 "A la busca del mas alla". Apparently Rodrigo is one of those composers who never evolved, writing in the last decades of the 20th century the same kind of impressionistic music that wasn't so cutting edge anymore even when he started writing it it is first decades. But now that the distance of time has reduced all the smoldering stylistic controversies to cold ashes, we can enjoy Rodrigo's music for what it offers, regardless of when it was written: its unabashed lyricism, its soaring melodies, its sense of color.
These four well-filled discs (all over 70 minutes) were first recorded between 1980 and 1985 and released by EMI. They've been licensed by the cheapo-cheapo Brilliant, but EMI has also released the complete series in a budget box (The Rodrigo Edition (4 CDs): Concertos & Orchestral Works Conducted by Enrique Batiz). At that price, it is no doubt the best possible introduction to the music of Rodrigo. Those with a liking for Falla and post Debussy-Ravel French music, as well as the late-Romantic music of Suk, Vaughan-Williams, Delius and Bax and the likes, should no doubt enjoy it.

Riassunto: This is a wonderful pot-pourri of European music from the first half of the sixteenth century - reflecting the pan-European origins of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. One of the chief delights of the disc is the consort singing of the male voices of La Capella Real. Savall now uses male altos in the vocal pieces by Enzina (and others) in the upper registers, rather than female sopranos (principally that of his wife, Montserrat Figueras) as he did in his 90's recordings with Astree. The results are perfect; altos Carlos Mena and Pascal Bertain make an abiding impression here, with Capella regular Danile Carnovich holding up the bass clef. Figueras takes the cantus in the monophonic 'ballad' pieces, and is still matchless in this kind of music. The winds of La Capella are a joy to hear - listen to the Susato Battaglia, and the Anonymous La Spagna.
In short, this is an echanting survey of the secular and religious music of 16th century Europe, imaginatively presented and beautifuly performed and recorded. A must - and a fine companion to Savall's life of Isablle I of Spain, also from Alia Vox.

Riassunto: This is a wonderful pot-pourri of European music from the first half of the sixteenth century - reflecting the pan-European origins of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. One of the chief delights of the disc is the consort singing of the male voices of La Capella Real. Savall now uses male altos in the vocal pieces by Enzina (and others) in the upper registers, rather than female sopranos (principally that of his wife, Montserrat Figueras) as he did in his 90's recordings with Astree. The results are perfect; altos Carlos Mena and Pascal Bertain make an abiding impression here, with Capella regular Danile Carnovich holding up the bass clef. Figueras takes the cantus in the monophonic 'ballad' pieces, and is still matchless in this kind of music. The winds of La Capella are a joy to hear - listen to the Susato Battaglia, and the Anonymous La Spagna.
In short, this is an echanting survey of the secular and religious music of 16th century Europe, imaginatively presented and beautifuly performed and recorded. A must - and a fine companion to Savall's life of Isablle I of Spain, also from Alia Vox.

Riassunto: As a fan of the music of Luciano Berio, I'm always on the look-out for recordings I might have missed.I was delighted to find this one. Laborintus 2 combines many elements such as the sung word, the spoken word, progressive classical and jazzelements to form a new concept in theatrical music. The performance on this CD took me by surprise. How could I have missed itbefore? There might be one small gripe, the lack of a text and translation. But I assume that that was to keep the price down.Anyway, don't you missout on this.

Riassunto: This album is an attempt to decipher the notes of ancient Christian chants found at the Vatican library that date back to VII - VIII centuries, when parts of Italy were still under the power of Byzantine emperors, and the Christian Church was not divided into the Catholic and Orthodox halves.
This music is solemn, ascetic and has a certain oriental flavor - let's not forget that Christianity originated in Middle East and the very word "Christian" was coined in Antioch, Syria. To me these chants sounded a bit like singing of the Mount Athos monk choir.
Good pick for all those exploring the roots of European, Christian and Mediterranean cultures irrespective of later splits and schisms.

Their experience reaps tremendous dividends with the two-CD set "Diáspora Sefardí". This is music of the Sefardim, the Spanish Jews exiled in 1492, but extends beyond the expected repertoire to include later music from those who settled as far away as Rhodes, Sofía and Sarajevo. The first disc is a programme of romances, Montserrat Figueras giving deeply impassioned performances pitched between heartrending elegy and searing eroticism. Compared to the cool perfection of the version by Florata on "Magnificentia Iberica", "El Rey de Fancia" comes alive with an earthy engagement which rivets the attention, while an epic of betrayal, "Nani, Nani", harnesses monumental emotional intensity. Throughout, the playing is superb, but inevitably the musicians really come into their own on the second CD, a set of instrumentals and improvisations, including the slow-burning rapture of "Axerico". Here is 130 minutes of incredibly evocative, primal music with the potential to go way beyond the early music market and become a huge hit with followers of folk, world, jazz and perhaps even rock.
